Menopause Related Fatigue

Fatigue is easily one of the most common complaints among women going through menopause. Not only does the lack of estrogen contribute to the symptom, but also insomnia, depression, and stress. Keeping your body in balance is a paramount to combating this debilitating condition.

Fatigue is generally described as an overall sense of tiredness. It can manifest as a simple lack of energy or evolve into something more serious, such as depression. Many women will ignore this symptom altogether, chalking it up to a mere lack of sleep an vowing to make it up later. However, for women experiencing menopause, it may not be quite that easy. The changes in body chemistry that menopausal women are undergoing puts them at a disadvantage as the body is already having to work harder than normal to cope. This coupled with symptoms that cause sleep disturbance and depression make it almost impossible to overcome without intervention by a doctor. Almost.

The first step when it comes to dealing with menopause related fatigue is to visit your doctor. The reason for this is two fold: one, to make sure that you don’t have any underlying health issues causing your fatigue, and two, learning what your options are for dealing with your menopause symptoms.

Undergoing a hormone replacement therapy protocol can treat the symptoms of menopause, however understand that the relief is temporary and comes with some side effects of its own. An alternative way to help deal with the symptoms of menopause, including the ones contributing to fatigue (hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia) is to eat more soy. Soy has been shown to contain compounds known as phytoestrogens. These compounds have been shown to mimic human estrogen and alleviate the symptoms of menopause as well as traditional hormone replacement therapies without the side effects.

Next, take the time to learn some relaxation techniques. These techniques will not only help you sleep better, but will also help you deal with life’s daily stresses. More sleep and less stress have been shown to have a positive impact on women going through menopause, especially in relation to fatigue.

Lastly, eat a well balanced diet, drink plenty of water and get some exercise. In order for your body to be able to cope with the chemical changes going on within, you must give it the tools it needs to perform efficiently. Eating a diet rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals as well as ensuring that you consume plenty of water will help combat the symptoms of fatigue and keep your body running at peak performance.
